Fireworks fire causes $250,000 damage, leaves 6 homeless

Six people are homeless after children playing with fireworks accidently set a tree on fire. The flames spread to a nearby house.

Toronto has strict bylaws surrounding private fireworks displays. Anyone using fireworks is required to have a fire extinguisher, a 10-litre pressurized water unit or working garden hose at hand while and after fireworks are used.

Toronto Fire is asking people who want to enjoy fireworks this Victoria Day long weekend to attend a public display instead of setting off their own, after a two-alarm fire caused by children playing with fireworks caused $250,000 in damage and left six people homeless.

Firefighters were called to a house on Monclova Rd., near Jane St. and Wilson Ave., at 9:39 p.m. Saturday. According to police, some children were playing with fireworks in a park adjacent to the home.

Capt. Mike Strapko said a tree was accidentally set on fire, which spread to the house, ultimately causing $250,000 in damage and forcing six residents out.

One firefighter received minor injuries from falling debris.

Investigators are currently looking into whether the home was an illegal rooming house.

Strapko said that fireworks, including sparklers, present a variety of safety hazards and should never be handled by children. He said that Toronto Fire is encouraging people who want to see a fireworks display this Victoria Day weekend to go to the numerous public displays being held in Toronto and surrounding cities.

Toronto has strict bylaws surrounding private fireworks displays. Without a permit, Torontonians are allowed to discharge fireworks on Canada Day and Victoria Day, but only outdoors on private property and at least 100 metres away from any place where explosive or flammable substances are stored.
